Feeling a Little Under the Weather?

ree

I have been experimenting with natural remedies that can work for the entire family. Here are my current household staples:

Mullein tea

Since it is very light in taste, young children love drinking the tea with some raw, organic honey (unprocessed preferred). I have tried a mullein tincture that I picked up from The Vitamin Shoppe. They have a huge assortment of organic herbal supplements in stock.

Next fall I will brew my own combination to eliminate the tea bags and utilize organic herbs. This tea is a combination of wild cherry bark, licorice root, mullein, and ginger. It is a smooth tea that is perfect to drink throughout the day. When I am out and about, I stop at Starbucks for a Medicine Ball (formally known as a Honey Citrus Mint Tea).

Vitamin D3/K2

I double the dose when ill. I purchase a liquid form to add to drinks or create a custom mixture depending on the symptoms. I figure the body will eliminate what is not needed. Please keep in mind the darker you are, the more vitamin D you need especially for those of us living in colder climates.

Magnesium Glycinate

When your bowel movements slow down, this supplement from Natural Vitality will gently get things going again.

Zinc Lozenges

It may help reduce the time you are sick. Use as directed on the packaging. The purer stuff tastes chalky. I purchased elderberry zinc lozenges at our local herbal store and they were tolerable for the 13 year old.

Coconut Water and Aloe Vera Juice

These are perfect options to keep your electrolytes balanced and keeps you out of urgent care for dehydration. I love Harmless Harvest coconut water for the simple ingredients: organic coconut water. I purchase it locally at Whole Foods. As for the aloe vera juice, I have purchased different brands depending on how desperate I am to find an organice, whole leave aleo vera juice. My favorite brands are Lakewood and Lily of the Desert. Fortunately, I have not had to use this combination since the winter of 2019. I was lethargic and could not keep much of anyting down.

Bone Broth

I purchase chicken bone broth through our co-op. It stays on hand in our freezer but can easily be made on your own using an Amish or organic, grass fed chicken. I add turmeric and sea salt to taste. I keep it simple and drink it down. Most people would probably make a vegetable soup.

Other things you can try are acupuncture, steam showers, and diffusers with essential oil (many companies have a Breathe Easy blend that works perfectly!).

My herbal medicine cabinet includes some other items that work for us and a little untraditional. We work with our acupuncturist to get prescription-only herbal remedies and our local Chinese herbalist for additional teas.

Stay healthy!
